Scope and content

Transcripts and abstracts of letters written between 1847 and 1856 by Irish emigrants in the United States to Irish nationalist politician and Young Ireland leader William Smith O'Brien. The letters span from the time Smith O'Brien was part of the 1847 Irish Confederation movement through the 1848 Young Ireland rebellion, Smith O’Brien’s serving of a sentence of transportation to Tasmania through to his exile in Brussels. Much of the correspondence is from fellow Young Irelanders and participants in the 1848 rebellion.
