The Albany Institute of History and Art, Albany, New York, provided Kerby A. Miller with reproductions of the original manuscript from which Miller created his transcripts.

Materials pertaining to the William McElroy memoir. William McElroy was born in 1796 in Drumantine, County Down, and emigrated to Albany, New York in 1822. About the memoir, Professor Kerby A. Miller wrote that, 'Its excellent representivity of contemporary emigrants, its broad life-coverage, its often detailed, highly literate, and sometimes even dramatic descriptions, and its situation of McElroy in important socioeconomic and cultural contexts both in Ireland and the US, albeit almost exclusively in the 1820s-30s, strongly recommends McElroy's memoir for inclusion' in his research and studies of Irish America.
