Following a previous conversation about an unnamed man known to Duddy; offering a psychological character sketch of a man who publicly has to act as a psychopath, who is obsessed with his cause and has been able to repress his guilt; if he now chose peace he would make himself redundant - 'he cannot compromise, cannot forgive, cannot surrender'.
