Scope and content
Bruce D. Boling's typed English language translation of a short excerpt from seanchaí Tomás Laighléis' 1977 book, Seanchas Thomáis Laighléis (Dublin: An Clóchomhar, pp. 223-224) describing early 20th-century 'farewell nights' (also known as 'American wakes'), community parties held for those emigrating to the United States. Per Boling: 'Tomás Laighléis was born in 1895 and was a native of Menlow, Co. Galway, four miles north of Galway city on the east bank of the river Corrib. The area was Irish-speaking in Laighléis's youth but is now in the breac-Ghaeltacht.'
