Scope and content

Article, 'The Vocational Group Movement' by Cornelius Lucey, Bishop of Cork. Archbishop Lucey calls for the reestablishment of vocational groups in line with Pope Pius XII's 1931 encyclical, 'Quadragesimo anno'. He states that vocational guilds are necessary because 'it is natural for people who come in contact with each other and have interests in common to form an association' and that 'it is required to plan the economy of the occupation as a whole'. Lucey also warns that there 'is a world of difference between the Fascist Corporation and the genuine vocational group', and that such groups 'should flourish best in democratic countries' while also giving credit to António de Oliveira Salazar's Estado Novo in Portugal. Attached is a letter from P.J. O'Reilly, County Tipperary S.R. Vocational Education Committee, Clonmel, who sent the article to Father Hayes.
