Scope and content
Copy of the June 1972 republished version of the autobiography of James 'Jemmy' Hope (1764-1847), a radical Irish democrat, labour activist, and leading organiser of the Society of United Irishmen. Active during the 1798 and 1803 rebellions, Hope stood out among the movement's leadership for his working-class perspective. His autobiography was originally recorded and published by historian Richard Robert Madden in The United Irishmen: Their Lives and Times (1846), and later republished in pamphlet and book forms by publishers like Athol Books, Merlin Press, and the British and Irish Communist Organisation (this version). This version includes both Madden's original preface and the British and Irish Communist Organisation's preface.
