Scope and content

Press cuttings of meetings of "The Society for the Preservation of the Irish Language" and of "The Gaelic Union for the Preservation and Cultivation of the Irish Language" made by Stephen J. Barrett, Meelick House, Kilmore, County Roscommon. Includes report of a parliamentary exchange about the Commission for Brehon Laws, complaining about the appointment of Prof. Atkinson for the work of O'Donovan and O'Curry (2 Aug 1887). Also a feature on the Gaelic Almanac for 1894 in the "Freeman's Journal". Also report for "The Evening Telegraph" on a lecture by John McNeill BA, on the early days of the Gaelic League to the St. Teresa's Total Abstinence Association in Clarendon St. Also obituary notice in "The Leitrim Observer" for Stephen Barrett (father of Stiophán Bairéad), a retired cess collector (13 Oct 1900). Many of the cuttings near the end refer to family members such as his brothers. Enclosed copy of a circular letter issued by John E Nolan Hon. Sec. of the Gaelic Union, 19 Kildare St., Dublin to the members of the Society for the Preservation of the Irish Language, The Council of the Gaelic Union, and to the members and associates of both bodies complaining about attempts by the Society for the Preservation of the Irish Language to acquire funds for the establishment of a Gaelic Journal, even though his society already runs one. He outlines the reasons why he and Canon Nourke split from the Society and set up the Gaelic Union (10 Nov 1889) [Formerly LSB156].
