Archival history

The Rowntree letters were passed on to Kerby A. Miller by his collaborator, Dr. Arnold Schrier. Per Schrier: 'All seven of the Rowntree Family letters listed on page 4 of your 2 October 1988 worksheet were in the possession of Mr. John Matthews, 48 Clanawley Road, Donnycarney, Dublin, who loaned them to me on 9 August 1955. In a letter to me of 12 July 1955, Matthews indicated that he had letters of his ancestors (his word) which his family had preserved over the years. He was willing to let me borrow them if I went out to his home. That's what I did.'

Materials pertaining to seven letters sent between 1851 and 1907 by members of the Rowntree (also Rountree, Roantree) family from various locations in the United States (primarily New York and Washington, D.C.) to their family in Dublin. The series consists of: biographical notes on the family; Kerby A. Miller's transcripts and Arnold Schrier's photocopies of the letters; and correspondence between Rowntree descendant Shirley A. Horton (also a grandniece of Michael Kilcran; see P155/12 and P237) who notes that there are still Rountrees living near Cavan.
