Scope and content

Materials pertaining to an 1890 memoir written by Rev. John O'Hanlon, an Irish Catholic priest, scholar and writer who also published poetry and illustrations, and involved himself in Irish politics. O'Hanlon was born in Stradbally, Queen's County (Laois) in 1821, eventually emigrating and settling with family members in Millwood, Missouri in 1843, He was ordained in 1847 and served in the Diocese of St. Louis until returning to Stradbally for health reasons in 1853, and is particularly known for his comprehensive Lives of the Irish Saints. Per Kerby A. Miller: 'O'Hanlon was one of thousands of Irish-born priests, teaching nuns, etc., who emigrated to the ""American mission"" and who, alongside Irish-Americans, comprised by far the largest contingent of Catholic clergy in the United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In that sense, O'Hanlon was representative. He was representative as well in that the majority of Irish priests, on both sides of the Atlantic, came from middle-class urban or rural (strong-farmer) backgrounds; this was especially true in the 19th century's early and middle decades. In the broadest sense, of course, O'Hanlon was not representative of mid-19th-century Irish emigrants, few of whom came from bourgeois backgrounds and enjoyed advanced educations to prepare them for seminary studies in Ireland or the US.'
The series includes: Miller's typed, edited transcripts of Rev. John O'Hanlon's, Life and Scenery in Missouri: Reminiscences of a Missionary Priest, Dublin: James Duffy & Co., 1890; a photocopied section of Rev. John O'Hanlon's,Irish-American History of the United States: Volume 1, New York: P. Murphy & Son, 1907; a photocopied dissertation, 'The Saga of an Irish Immigrant Family: The Descendants of John Mullanphy' by Alice Lida Cochran, 1958; photocopied sections of O'Hanlon's The Irish Emigrant's Guide for the United States from the Critical Edition published in 1976 by Arno Press; Miller's research notes.
