A photocopy of the published Rev James McElroy letters which appear in Eustis, Alvin (1972), 'On the Road in 1853: A Journey of the Reverend James McElroy', Ohio History 81, vol. 3 (Summer, 1972), pp. 221-227. The letters of Rev. James McElroy are addressed to McElroy’s wife Delaware, Ohio, and describe a journey from that town to Lexington, Kentucky, in 1835. McElroy had taken a leave of absence from the parish of St. Peter's in Delaware in order to serve for a time as agent for the American Bible Society.
James McElroy was born at Spike Island, Cove of Cork in 1805 and studied there for the Church of Ireland ministry at Trinity College, Dublin. With his bride of a few months, he came to Gambier, Ohio, in 1828 and was a tutor at Kenyon College until 1830.
