Scope and content
Microfilmed copy of the 'Report of the proceedings of the National Repeal Convention of the Friends of Ireland in the United States of America: held in the city of Philadelphia, February 22nd and 23rd, 1842'. At the convention, delegates gathered to coordinate American support for Daniel O'Connell’s Loyal National Repeal Association, which campaigned to repeal the Acts of Union of 1800 between Great Britain and Ireland. The convention and the broader American Repeal movement ran into deep political conflict. Daniel O'Connell was a vocal abolitionist who urged Irish Americans to oppose slavery, which put him and pro-O'Connell factions at odds with Irish-American communities and leaders closely allied with the pro-slavery Democratic Party.
