Red Book notebook (c.120 pp) kept by [Brendan Duddy], most notably containing notes of July 1981 (35pp) pertaining to an intensive period of discussions about the hunger strikes: 168 mostly drafts for communications from the [Provisional IRA] on behalf of prisoners negotiating their status, also a briefing from British government side [19 July]; ending on personal note: 'The British are asking for their plan to be accepted. A won't move ... I can't save K. Doherty's life. It is so tragic.' (July 20) Including a note on Joe McDonnell's death which they heard of on the 7am-news (8 July), and mention of Brendan [Duddy jr]'s emergency illness (16-19 July). Connected to this section, enclosing a separate page commenting on the prisoners terminating the protest and to the government's statement of 20 July on the measures to be taken.
