Scope and content
The R.G. Harvey memoir is a written account of the Harvey family, written by R.G. Harvey 'at the request of his daughter Anna' in 1911. At the time, Harvey lived in Lyndhurst, Ontario, Canada but he was born in 1855 in Durrow, County Laois, where his father worked as a gamekeeper for Viscount Ashbrook at Castle Durrow. Harvey's mother also worked at Castle Durrow as a lady's maid for one of Ashbrook's daughter, and that was where his parents met. Harvey was apprenticed as a stone miller at the age of 12 on a £20 bond and eventually became a journeyman miller himself. His short memoir discusses this process, as well as his family life in Ireland, decision to emigrate to Canada and his family joining him, and his initial settling in Canada. The series consists of a photocopy of the typed manuscript, which includes an annotated Harvey family tree and genealogy.
