              File of letters from David Marcus to John McGahern. Marcus was a writer and editor at the Irish Press Newspaper. Letters in the 1970s discuss the inclusion of a story, "Swallows" (1971) in the New Irish Writing series; letters regarding publication of an extract from "The Leavetaking" (1974) and later letters discuss the inclusion of "The Wine Breath" in an anthology of Irish Ghost Stories, and other McGahern work being included in Phoenix Irish Short Story anthologies that Marcus is editing.

Also a letter from [Andrea], Mindlin's wife, writing to those who knew Murray with details of his recent passing and comments on his life. One letter is on headed paper of "Censorship", which Mindlin edited (Jan 1970).

              Typescript letters from Bernard Loughlin, Resident Director of the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Annaghmakerrig, to John McGahern, writing to thank McGahern for his time and service to the Guthrie Centre board and also with comments on seeing McGahern's play "The Power of Darkness".
              Also includes copy letter sent from Loughlin to a local operator of boats and waterskiing on the lake by the Centre, the noise from which was disturbing residents at the Centre.

              File of letters from Kevin Lehane, whom I fondly recall from his time as manager of the Ambassador and Academy cinemas in Dublin. Lehane writes in detail of the opening night production of The Barracks, adapted for the stage by Hugh Leonard; comments on Irish society and censorship and of the banning the Dark - he mentions that copies of the book are circulating and being widely read in Dublin, and wider comments about McGahern's writing and of Dublin culture of the time.

              File of letters to John McGahern from the New Yorker magazine. Includes payslips with fees paid to McGahern for stories published, "High Ground", "Around the Big Stone House", "Sierra Leone". Letters from editorial assistants include clearance of permissions for reproduction of stories "Summer at Strandhill" and "The Wine Breath" (1967, 1977). Also letters from Robert Hemenway sending apologies that "Bomb Box" was not published there (1969) and from Mary D. Kierstead (1974) rejecting an unnamed story by McGahern, commenting that " ... it is extremely difficult for a man to put himself in the shoes of a complex, introspective woman".
