              Letters from Patrick Gregory to John McGahern, Gregory was a senior editor at Atlantic Monthly and also editor at Gambit Press, and later Alfred A. Knopf publishers. The former and latter were publishers of McGahern's stories and books in the U.S. Knopf published The Dark, for example. The letters discuss in detail the drafting, editing, revising, publication and design of books by McGahern and published in the U.S.; correspondence discuss in detail specific books by McGahern such as "Nightlines"; also discussed is Gregory's reasons for leaving the Atlantic Monthly, and wider discussions around literary publishing, and Irish writing. NOTE: includes handwritten note by McGahern with notes on edits to works including The Dark.

              Includes discussions on writing by both writers, seeking advice on publishing a book of stories with Faber. Letters through the 1960s discuss McGahern's THE DARK, Higgins meeting with Harold Pinter, McGahern's marriage ending, the sending of banned books to Higgins, time spent in Spain. Some later comments include "Dear John, I read AMONGST WOMEN with great pleasure. You are writing about Ireland like no one else". (28 Jan 1991).

              File of letters from Kevin Lehane, whom I fondly recall from his time as manager of the Ambassador and Academy cinemas in Dublin. Lehane writes in detail of the opening night production of The Barracks, adapted for the stage by Hugh Leonard; comments on Irish society and censorship and of the banning the Dark - he mentions that copies of the book are circulating and being widely read in Dublin, and wider comments about McGahern's writing and of Dublin culture of the time.
