Farrell also says "You may have heard Frank Gogarty died a fortnight ago. . . it was very sudden. . ."

              Copy letter from Boyle to Farrell, Trench Avenue, Belfast, replying to Farrell's letter of 3 Feb 1980. Boyle states "I was absolutely stunned and deeply saddened to learn of Frank Gogarty's death." and recounting memories about Gogarty, his imprisonment, evidence to the Scarmon Tribunal and also saying "I believe myself that it was a combination of his treatment by NICRA and the prison sentence . . .which broke his health." Boyle also discusses the U.S.C. piece written by Farrell and also Special Powers Act legal research. Attached is a copy press cutting of story by Farrell, "Open and Shut Case of Official Secrecy" at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. (PRONI)

              Copy letter from Boyle to Lord Peter Melchett, the House of Lords, Westminster, "Dear Peter, I am almost swinging round to your view on a Bill of Rights in the aftermath of what I have heard . . ." Boyle continues to discuss the case of a juvenile who had been taken to Castlereagh for interrogation and denied access to a parent or guardian. Boyle describes in detail the judge's response to this case and comments on the standard and quality of the judiciary in Northern Ireland.
