Scope and content

These letters cover the famine years. They record the dispute of George Charles, 3rd Earl, with the Poor Law Commissioners over the payment of poor rate and the inability of the Board of Guardians at Castlebar, of which the Earl was Chairman, to deal with the famine crises. The Board was dissolved in 1847. A report on the potato crop in parts of County Mayo in 1845 is included [see P48/14/14], as are the letters of G. Vaughan Carleton, written at the beginning of the Famine, and from Lord John Russell, Prime Minister, written in 1851.
