Scope and content
Photocopy of holograph letter from Brendan [Duddy], Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain, entitled or superscribed 'Elizabeth', thanking [her] for letters. Giving a personal account of events since April 1993; he has been in Lanzarote since October. Discussing the intense secret dialogue between British and Sinn Féin (the word 'dialogue' having entered the scene in the late 1980s via Israel/ Palestine); the great disappointment when Sinn Féin's offer of 10 May was not taken up despite subsequent involvement of John Hume and Albert Reynolds; the important meeting in London 2 November; the interrogation by Sinn Féin who doubted Duddy and their decision to replace him. Relating his feelings of redundancy: 'has my contribution to peace in Ireland ended. Is my knowledge to be buried alive... It's as if both sides must keep me a secret. Why?' Some family news. NOTE: The document is partly restricted and a reprographic copy will be made available for consultation.
