Scope and content
Typed transcripts and a photocopy of a letter written in 1848 by Peter Connolly in Fort Smith, Arkansas to his father, Thomas Connolly, in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan. Connolly discusses his search for a place to live in Arkansas that is welcoming to 'foreigners', his trials getting settled in America, and also urges his father and anyone they know to come to America to escape the hardships in Ireland at the time. He writes: 'O what humiliation and all for what for getting leave to live and work hard almost day and night for the Support of others and being persecuted for adhering to the religion of Christ and their forefathers, my feelings at this time urge me to say more on the Subject but I must leave off but let those who have hearts in their bosoms and who despise degradation come to a land of 'equal rights and equal liberties' and leave the landlords & rents and Parsons and hard work for nothing and the humiliation and degradation to those who have the mean hearts and sordid minds to bear such a state of things.'
