Paper written and signed by Father Hayes in which he initially celebrates the position of the Irish farmer compared to in the past, citing the removal of landlordism and the ability of farmers to own their own land resulting in a higher standard of living in the post-Civil War era. Father Hayes states that with this higher standard of living came higher expenses, and that the dropping of land, produce, and stock values in the late 1920s has resulted in farmers being unable to pay bank debts even if they sell their lands off. He praises what he sees as the high standard of education in National Schools but notes that there is not enough room on farms to sustain an entire family. He closes by writing that there are many problems in rural Ireland, 'but they are of a material order. In the spiritual order our difficulties are few'.
