Scope and content
Materials pertaining to a set of letters written to Irish emigrants living in the mining city of Butte, Montana between 1907 and 1922. The legacy of Irish emigration to Butte was large; as recently as the 2020 census, Butte had the highest proportion of Irish American residents of any city in the United States with over a quarter of the population claiming Irish descent. The series includes: reproductions of six letters; biographical notes on Down native Owen Morgan (one of the letter authors); and research and correspondence provided by Professor David Emmons of the University of Montana.
