Scope and content
Kerby A. Miller's transcribed excerpts of letters found in the Orestes Brownson Papers, University of Notre Dame Archives [reference number I-5-a] in which Brownson, a mid-19th century American intellectual and Catholic convert who attempted to harmonise ethnic immigrant identities with American democratic tradition without advocating for homogenisation, criticises nativist aspects of Irish immigrants and questions the loyalty of some to the United States. Brownson is credited with introducing the term 'Americanization' into the public discourse.-
