Materials pertaining to the cases filed by Mrs Nebahat Akkoç, former teacher and former head of the Diyarbakır branch of the Education and Science Workers Union, Eğit-Sen, against the Republic of Turkey with the European Commission of Human Rights (application numbers 22947/93 and 22948/93, referred to internally within the Kurdish Litigation Project as Case 10 and assigned to Aisling Reidy as lead) on behalf of her herself and of her deceased husband. Akkoç alleged: that she had been subjected to a disciplinary sanction in respect of an article published in a newspaper concerning the detention of herself and 10 other teachers on 27 October 1992 at a meeting with the National Education Director; that her husband, Zübeyir Akkoç, also a teacher involved in the Eğit-Sen trade union (the union had been declared illegal by the Turkish Government earlier that year), had been killed 13 January 1993 in circumstances for which the authorities were responsible; that she had been deprived of an effective remedy and access to court in respect of her husband's death; that she had been tortured by the police in custody; and that she had been intimidated in respect of her application to the Commission. The European Court of Human Rights ruled in favour of Mrs Akkoç on 10 October 2000 with regard to compensation, awarding her £88,648 in damages and expenses.
