Scope and content
Draft of a report authored by Markus Casey on the commission of Rónán Swan, project archaeologist for the Westmeath County Council Regional Design Office. Casey was commissioned to report on the areas of the proposed corridors for a new alignment of the N6 road (now the M6 motorway) between Athlone and Kinnegad. The report is based on a comprehensive desk and field study complemented by aerial reconnaissance. Casey identifies 110 sites of archaeological significance in the study area and notes that 3 sites will need to be avoided in order to be preserved. The report lists potential impacts on each of these sites along with Casey's opinion on recommended actions for each site (recording, monitoring, test excavation, or avoidance). The results were ultimately published by Swan as part of an environmental impact statement (P164/1/1/29).
