Scope and content
Photocopy of the history of the Anderson family of County Down, written by Mary Gayer-Anderson (née Morgan). The memoir was originally written in 1917 and was added to and revised periodically through 1948. Henry and Mary Anderson married at Rostrevor in 1876. The couple and their four young children emigrated to the United States in September 1884, spending time in Wichita, Chattanooga, Alameda, and Chicago before returning to Ireland in 1889 and then moving to Tonbridge, Kent in 1891. The male children (Reginald D'Arcy, Robert Grenville, and Thomas Gayer) went on to notable careers in the British Army; the Gayer-Anderson museum in Cairo is named for Robert and their grandson, General Sir John D'Arcy Anderson (donor of the material), who was the first Colonel Commandant of Ulster Defence Regiment from 1969 to 1979. The series also includes General Sir Anderson's letter to Kerby A. Miller donating the manuscript copy.
