Scope and content

Autobiographical letter of Michael O’Sullivan in New York written to Rev. Brother John A. Grace of the Christian Brothers in North Richmond Street, Dublin, in 1870.
Per Brother W.P. Allen: '...the writer, Michael O'Sullivan, who was born and educated in Limerick. He states that he left his native city for Dublin in 1823, where he became apprenticed to a stone-mason, worked at his trade in many places up and down the country, farm Donegal to Cork; became skilled as a stone-cutter; abandoned the trade and trained as a Teacher; taught school in Tullamore till 1840, when he was forced to quit the country - being an out-spoken Irishman who made no secret of his antipathy to foreign domination. Emigrated to the United States where he settled near New York. When war broke out in 1861 he raised a Company of 86 men for the 63rd Regiment in which he served - retiring with the rank of Major. Was engaged in 23 general engagements (he gives the names of 7 or 8 of the principle [sic] ones) retired, having been seriously wounded, was granted a pension, and given employment as Clerk in the United States Marshal's Office, New York. In the years of retirement his family lived in Albany.'
The series consists of transcripts and reproductions of the letter, plus Brother Allen’s correspondence with Kerby A. Miller forwarding the letter.
