Michael O'Kinealy was one of the first trache of students who entered Queen's College Galway, coming to the College in 1853, and completing a Diploma in Engineering in 1855. An article in the Anglo-Celt newspapers of 10 Nov 1853 noted that one of the "very talented young townsmen" of Cavan, Michael O'Kinealy, had succeded in obtaining first prize in Engineering in his entrance exams. It also noted that he had studied in Kilmore Academy in the town. As well as a Diploma in Engineering in 1855 with First Class Honours, he also graduated with a Masters in Engineering in 1882.
