Scope and content
Printout of the electronic version of a Military Story magazine article reprinted in Irish America magazine documenting the war experiences of Michael Coyne (b. 1945) of Jenkinstown, County Meath, one of a select number of Irishmen who fought for the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Coyne’s decorations include a Combat Infantry Badge, a Bronze Star with V Device, Purple Heart with two clusters (Coyne was in fact wounded five times during the war), a Vietnam Campaign medal, and a Gallantry Medal awarded by the then South Vietnamese government. Returning to Ireland in 1979, he became a founding member of the John F. Kennedy Post, American Legion (Dublin), in 1996. He later took a case against the United States government over the effects of Agent Orange, a chemical used to defoliate the jungles in Vietnam.
