Memo from W R Rice, Lucknow, to P J Freyer, Civil Surgeon, Moradabad, forwarding a copy of a letter from A P MacDonnell, esq, Secretary to the Government of India, Calcutta, to the Secretary to the Government of the NWP and Oudh (18 Dec 1888). It states that the Governor General in Council 'agrees with the Government of the North Western Provinces and Oudh that a fee of Rs 50,000 would under the circumstances be the very utmost which could be considered reasonable' in Dr Freyer's case. A definite rule of procedure to be observed in future is included, which states that the fees to be paid for medical attendance on native princes must be settled by the local Government or the Government of India, before being communicated to the medical officer involved. A covering letter received by Rice from the Under Secretary to the Government of NWP and Oudh, expresses the Lieutenant Governor's regret that Freyer did not consult his superiors before accepting such a large gift (17 Jan 1889).(No 4-7)
