Scope and content
Meeting between Gerry Kelly, Mitchell McLaughlin, Siobhán O’Hanlon, Maurice Hayes and Mr. D Goodall at Clonard Monastery, Belfast, as part of a conversation between Mr. Goodall, who sought to ‘represent the British view unofficially and privately’. Letter from Siobhán to Maurice arranging the meeting, and a typescript account of the meeting by Mr. Goodall. He notes the attitudes of the SF representatives, and their mistrust of the British Government, which was talking to other parties but because of the suspended IRA campaign were not entering into talks at ministerial level with SF at that time. He commented that SF felt ‘publicly humiliated’ by the British stance while they were talking to other parties, and suggested that someone, not a minister, but with ‘special seniority and authority’, could act as an inoculator or go-between.
