Sub-series 1 - Medical Fees from the State of Rampur

All of the following documents, except P57/67, were grouped together [mistakenly in a brown envelope addressed to 'Mr Councillor Freyer, MA, 42 Owlstone Road, Cambridge,' and inscribed 'Sir PJF - Madrid Doctorate', see P57/111]. The letters relate to the payment of fees to Peter Freyer for medical services rendered to the Indian State of Rampur in a private capacity. The State of Rampur supported the British administration. It was ruled by the Nawab, who was Mohamad Kulb Ali Khan from 1865 to 1887. Freyer records that this Nawab died at the end of March 1887 after he had been attending him for a couple of months [see P57/72]. The Nawab's successor Mohamad Mushtaq Ali Khan was at the time of his father's death, suffering from a severe paralysis but under Freyer's care he recovered sufficiently to be placed on the throne. However owing to the Nawab's ill health, General Azim Uddin Khan, Vice President of the Council of Rampur, carried out many of the responsibilities of state. The General contracted rheumatic fever in the summer of 1888 and it was for his medical care of both the Nawab and the General that Freyer received the lakh of rupees in August 1888. Mohamad Mushtaq Ali Khan died in Feb 1889. Freyer continued to treat members of General Azim Uddin Khan's family and other officials of the State of Rampur until the end of 1892. The new Nawab Mohamad Hamid Ali Khan was very young at the time of his father's death so the Council ran the affairs of the State. A woman murdered General Azim Uddin Khan sometime in 1891 or early 1892. Freyer attended State trials during the summer of 1892. This group of letters has been divided into 2 parts concerning firstly the lakh of rupees paid in 1888 and secondly the resultant bar on Freyer's promotion and the payment of further fees. The brown envelope containing the letters and a printed flyer advertising The Modern Treatment of Stone in the Bladder by Litholapaxy by P J Freyer are listed at the end of the 2 parts.
