Wellcome' Medical Diaries of Peter Freyer, 'War Emergency Edition', each page is laid out on a weekly basis with columns for the name and address of the patient, each day of the week and £ s.d. Freyer recorded the name of the patient and put crosses in the day columns for their visits, sometimes recording the time. He saw between 10 and 20 individual patients each week, some of whom were examined every day or even twice a day. Some patients paid regular visits, for example Lord Lansdowne, who came to see Freyer every fortnight on a Monday. Freyer also made notes relating to the time and date of the operations, the place of operation, the name of the assisting doctor and the anaesthetist. The patients who were operated on are grouped together on the page and were visited by him every day. Freyer operated on John Redmond, the Irish Nationalist Party leader and MP, at 3 York Place, on Friday 1 Mar 1918, at 9.45 am and visited him on the following 5 consecutive days. A note in red ink records the death of John Redmond at 8 am on 6 March. On 13 Dec 1920 he operated on Sir Horatio G Walpole and visited him almost every day for the following month. By the middle of Feb 1921 the number of patients seen by Freyer was reduced to 3 or 4 per week and by July this was reduced to 1. His last operation is recorded on Tuesday 10 May 1921 at 10.30 am on a patient named Baines. In the last 2 weeks of August Freyer took his annual holidays. In one diary he records brief details of his daily activities on a holiday in Scotland from 17-28 Aug 1918, when he shot grouse and played golf. Each diary contains printed therapeutic notes in the front and Wellcome advertising in the back. Black, purse diaries, size 11x17x1½ cms.
