Scope and content
Kerby A. Miller's excerpts and notes regarding a number of letters written by members of three Protestant (probably Presbyterian) families related by marriage - the McCulloghs, the Montgomerys, and the Hutchisons - in County Antrim, South Carolina, Illinois, and Nebraska, between 1823 and 1874.
Per Kerby A. Miller: 'The letters illustrate:
- Social and economic conditions in rural east Ulster, 1823-58: crops, prices, wages, tenant- right, agrarian violence, emigration, and the Great Famine.
- Local responses to political and religious developments and conflicts: e.g., the 'New Reformation'; O'Connell's campaign for Repeal of the Union; division in the Presbyterian church; etc.
- Cultural and moral conditions in east Ulster: adultery, bastardy, violence (Hutchison).
- Bitter intra-familial conflicts and their abusive consequences (Hutchison).
- Farming and social conditions, generally, in among small 'planters' in rural South Carolina and the Florida frontier, and for homesteader on the Nebraska frontier.
- The US Civil War's impact on 'loyal' or 'disloyal' immigrants.
- Problems proving naturalization as US citizens.'
