Scope and content

Press release issued by the Language Freedom Movement welcoming Labour's new language policy, which makes Gaelic an optional rather than a compulsory subject for any Certificate examination. In the countdown to the 1969 general election, this means that Fianna Fáil are the only political party in favour of compulsory Irish. The press release also praises Desmond Fennell's recent proposal: 'Plandáil Chonnachta' (see G44/5/3), a proposal to establish new Irish speaking communities in the Gaeltacht areas of West Galway, loosely based on the idea of the Kibbutz in Israel.
