Scope and content

Materials pertaining to 50 letters written in 1830-1832 included in The Emigrant's Guide; Containing Practical and Authentic Information and Copies of Original and Unpublished Letters from Emigrants to their Friends in the Counties of Mayo, Galway, and Roscommon, printed by John Hoban (Westport, 1832). Per Kerby A. Miller: 'The guide includes a description of Upper Canada (land, farming, employment) and a price listing of various passages to North America. The letters are mostly incomplete (extracts) and do not contain as much information on the writers and recipients as some of the groups of letters of families etc.'
The series includes an inventory and brief description of the letters, Miller's research notes, and a photocopied section of The Emigrant's Guide, which includes some of the letters and other information.
