Letter from Elizabeth Bingham, wife of former Lord Chief Justice Tom Bingham, to Prof. Boyle. Bingham has interest in issues in the Sudan and relates to Boyle she recently had lunch with Hussein Ibrahim Adam, the new head of the Political Section of the Sudan Embassy. "He wishes to institute 'popular diplomacy', promoting non-governmental links between British and Sudanese people and institutions." It is suggested British government would not fund such engagement and Bingham suggested an Institution such as University Essex and Boyle as a contact for Ibrahim Adam. Bingham adds ". . . my impression is that the El Shifa bombing showed the Sudanese Government how few friends they had and I suspect they are trying to rejoin the world". Letter also attached (16 Feb 2000) from Boyle to Elizabeth Bingham, in reply and comments "I think it would be wrong for the LCJ or other judiciary to go to Sudan. It would be exploited simply." and offers further suggested interactions with contacts in regard to Human Rights issues in the Sudan.
