Letter to Canon Hayes from Michael Downes on the letterhead of G. O'Doherty & Son Ltd., timber importers and hardwaremen, Ennis. Downes writes that the ten positions that were vacant with his firm have now been filled and are unlikely to open up again soon. He laments that 'late marriages are the curse of this country and of course smug Bachelors.' Downes also proposes that land division 'could have a big say in arresting depopulation if approached properly: (1) By taking it out of politics; (2) By making marriage an essential qualification; (3) By giving land to the sons of small farmers whose holding should not exceed 30 acres.'
