Scope and content

Letter from Lord Altamont, Dublin to Richard 2nd Earl, Castlebar, informing him of how things are proceeding at this 'very momentous and most critical period'. He mentioned in his last letter that Enniscorthy and Kilbeggan had rebelled and returned anti unionist representatives and now Philipstown [Tullamore, Co Offaly] is threatening to do the same. He writes of the Earl's kinsman John B[ingha]m, who 'this day declared he was offered £20,000 for his Borough and his votes' by the anti unionists and wants at least a similar bargain from Lord Castlereagh. [John Bingham was created 1st Baron Clanmorris on 31 July 1800]. The opposition is supposed to have collected £50,000, which he thinks will be more effective than the same number of muskets. The packets have just come in but he has not heard the news yet. Lord Cornwallis [Lord Lieutenant] says that there is no question of peace at present. Gibson, 'the greatest rascal', is to go to Castlebar on the part of the Barrack Board. He wishes the Earl would get Tom Ellison 'to sound The Trumpet as to county interest.' He writes that' There is vast anger at the Castle at Lord Downshire', his new manifesto states that 'the country is sold to England'.
