Scope and content
Letter to Father Hayes from Henry Vincent Marshall, Bishop of Salford, thanking him for responding to his letter of inquiry regarding a woman named Breda O'Connell ('Had I known you were the well known Father Hayes who has done so much to prevent emigration I am afraid I would not dare to write'). Bishop Marshall wished Father Hayes well in his effort to find employment for people at home, talks about the shortage of housing emigrants find when they arrive ('...they find no peace of shelter except in a hotel or with the "professional" landlady who wants them within the kitchen as little as possible"), and that 'they are – especially the girls – in much greater danger than our local girls.'
