He draws attention to the heavy arrears owed by Michael Curtin of Knockaculleen. He is willing to pay a higher rent rather than have the arrears hanging over him, as he is anxious to get married. He states that he will try and bring Hynes to his senses, and that Costello would take the land as Hynes could not be seen as much of a threat to Costello.
