Scope and content
First 8 pages of a typed copy of a lecture given by Father Hayes [see also P134/12/1/2/10/29]. Father Hayes opens by stating the 'I heard the French Minister in Dublin tell us that France fell because France neglected her youth because, as he said, a hardy industrious and thrifty generation brought up a soft idle and pleasure loving generation.' He advocates for the reestablishment of Rural Science and agricultural education, rural youth clubs, GAA playing fields in every parish, and other forms of recreation to keep youth engaged in their community. Father Hayes mentions the agricultural summer school that Muintir na Tíre has arranged to be held at Pallaskenry in 1943 in cooperation with the Salesian Fathers, and suggests that decaying mansions taken from divided estates be given to local voluntary bodies such as Muintir na Tíre to serve as part-time agricultural schools.
