Scope and content
Lecture by Father Hayes in which he laments what he sees as the negative impact of popular cinema on morals and culture due to its promotion of commercialism ('Education could have been made easy and enjoyable. The highest ideals could have been made to live but the contrary has been the result and the worst features of humanity have got the greatest publicity). He states that 'the gifts that have come to humanity from human genius have been made instruments of destruction and retrogression'. Father Hayes states that he refuses to denounce cinema but that it should be 'a power for good' and then discusses the efforts of Muintir na Tíre's Cinema Co-Operative Society, formed the previous year, to 'show clean, healthy and educational pictures especially for the rural people'. He closes by stating that another step would be to 'establish cinemas in many of our villages under the control of a public body such as Muintir na Tíre'.
