Scope and content
The Joseph Witherow letters are a set of four letters written between 1867 and 1914 by Joseph Witherow of Millikens Bend, Louisiana, to his cousin Rev. John Witherow in County Derry. Per Bruce D. Boling: 'Joseph Witherow is from Aughlish, Co. Derry. He has brothers and sisters in Ballinderry and "Knockcloughran" (unidentified), and his cousin John Witherow owns "Mullihash", probably a farm on the slopes of Mullaghash Mtn. Another cousin (Mary Anne Moore) lives at Feeny. His uncle had a flax mill at "Hill Head" (unidentified, but near Aughlish and Gallany). Joseph Witherow: Millikens Bend, Louisiana (1867); owed $9000 from Cousin Robert's estate on Mississippi River (1867); employed as overseer by ""lady"" (1865), who gives him an interest in two stores (1867); married, has 2-year-old daughter by 1881; moves to Tallulah, Louisiana (1914: Millikens Bend is largely abandoned); served as magistrate for 22 years.' Witherow was also a veteran of the Confederate Ary in the American Civil War.
The series includes: Bruce D. Boling’s biographical notes and compiled census notes pertaining to Joseph Witherow and family; Kerby A. Miller’s transcripts of the Witherow letters; Miller’s correspondence with Louisiana and Mississippi historical organisations attempting to gather information on Witherow; and information provided by researcher C. Calvin Adams Jr. on the Witherow family and on Madison Parish and Millikens Bend, Louisiana.
