Scope and content
The series consists of a single, published letter, written by John Murdoch Jnr, in Pitt township, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to his fiancée, Jane Robb, probably near Belfast, on 8 November 1826. The letter was published as 'Historical Society Notes and Documents. The Murdoch Family: A Letter from John Murdoch, Jr., (1802-1882) to his fiancée, Jane Robb, in Ireland,' in the Western Pennsylvania Historical Magazine vol. 48 (1965), pp. 109-114. This published version was almost certainly corrected in spelling and punctuation from the original manuscript, the location of which is not given. The last pages of the article contain a 'Murdoch Genealogical Sketch', by Robert Jameson Jones, which provides much information about the Murdoch and Robb emigrants and their descendants, and a photograph, which Jones identifies as of John Murdoch (1780-1827), the letter-writer's father, but in fact must be of John Murdoch Jnr in old age, or of another Murdoch of his generation.
