Scope and content
Kerby A. Miller's typed excerpts and abstracts of what he notes as 'letters from emigrants in America, to Mrs. Deane (John Dillon's cousin), Ballaghderreen, Co. Mayo' [now County Roscommon], held in the John Dillon Papers at Trinity College, Dublin. Per Miller: 'Before the Easter Rising, Dillon's American correspondence is very mixed, some advocating a "go-easy" policy on Home Rule in view of the Great War crisis, while others advocated Ireland's taking full advantage of England's difficulties. (There aren't enough letters to draw any conclusions as to general Irish-American opinion.) The letters above constitute only a small sampling of the Irish- American letters to Dillon in Ms. 6844; Mss. 6845-46 were not examined for lack of time, and because they consist of letters written after 1917. In the future, all the Dillon letters should be examined much more carefully than time has allowed here; in particular, there are long letters which give detailed information on Irish-American politics, factions, and personalities; these have only been skirted, at best, here.'
