Scope and content

Kerby A. Miller’s notes pertaining to the Kells family, members of whom authored letters written in 1883-1901 between Kentucky and County Armagh. Miller writes, 'the primary authors of the letters were brothers, James Kells (writing from Kentucky), and Thomas Kells, from Co. Armagh. We have two-way correspondence in this collection [...] Their father was Robert Kells of Grange, Oneilland, Co. Armagh, whose family emigrated from Scotland. Presumably Presbyterian. According to family tradition, Robert Kells was a United Irishman, or at least a sympathizer; fled to Scotland in 1798; was pardoned and returned to his farm. D. 1832. Their mother was Jane McKee, born 1804/5. Died ca. 1888.'
