Scope and content
Materials pertaining to a set of 17 letters written between 1801 and 1810 by James Horner to his family in County Derry. Horner, who emigrated in 1801, was a storekeeper in Philadelphia before leaving in March 1803 to teach school in Maryland. By 1807 he was a private tutor to the children of Maryland congressman Edward Lloyd, and by 1809 had realised his dream of becoming a storekeeper in Vienna, Maryland.
The series consists of: Kerby A. Miller’s research notes on Horner and family; Irish census and land valuation data regarding the Horner family; transcripts of the Horner letters created by both Miller and PRONI; Miller’s correspondence with researchers, genealogists, and historical organisations while researching Horner; and photocopies of pages from published histories of Maryland for historical context.
