Scope and content

Transcript of a letter written by J. Hale Sypher containing discussion of his life as a student and of a local riot between Irish and Yankee railroad workers. Per Marie-Louise Rouget, 'Based on its contents and the identification of its author, the date of the letter appears incorrect. The author is apparently Jacob Hale Sypher who graduated from Alfred University in 1859, a co-educational institution since its founding in 1836. He later became an attorney and politician having grown up near Millerstown, Pennsylvania.'
