Scope and content

Transcripts of letters written by Catholic missionary priests serving in northern California between 1852 and 1871 as excerpted from Walsh, Henry J. (1946), Hallowed Were the Gold Dust Trails: The Story of the Pioneer Priests of Northern California (Santa Clara: University of Santa Clara Press). The authors were either priests born in Ireland or priests ministering in heavily Irish communities. The majority of letters were written by Eugene O'Connell, the first Bishop of Grass Valley (now within the Diocese of Sacramento).
