Letter from Brig. Major H Denison for the Colonel for C[ivil] R[oad] E[ngineering], Dublin Castle, acknowledging receipt of his letter and stating that there has been no change in the War Department's decision of 1881, that they bore no liability for the repiar of the road to Aughinish Tower, Co Galway. Includes copy reply letter from John Wilson Lynch, Hotel Sonnenberg, Seelisberg, Canton Ure, Suisse [Switzerland] expressing his regret that the War Department will not maintain the road and adding that as he declined to buy the tower in 1881, should an accident occur the responsibility will devolve on the War Department, asking them to reconsider the matter.
Letter from John Franks, Church Property & Collection Section of the Irish Land Commission, stating that the lands John Wilson Lynch held at Aughinish were in the Electoral Division of Duras in Gort Union, and that rates were payable out of his rent. Copy reply by John Wilson Lynch states that the lands of Aughinish have been in Ballyvaughan Union for some time, and asks that the receipts from them would be acceptable to the Commission also.
Letter from R Paulling, surveyor with the Galway Office of the Surveyor of Taxes. requesting a reason for the big decrease compared to last year and noting that he had not entered the rent received for the Cahermore division of the townland of Kilomoran. Enclosure rental received and Poor Law Valuation list for a number of townlands on the Duras estate.
Letter from Thomas Comyn, Ballyvaughan Union, Co Clare, informing him for a resolution passed by the District Council of their intention to 'sink a pump on the Island of Aughinish' for the provision of water for the inhabitants. They expect John Wilson Lynch to give them the site.
Letter from JB Franks, The Irish Land Commission, 24 Upper Merrion Street, Dublin, informing him that the only way to postpone the proposed hearings to the next sitting at Galway, was to get an order from Court through his solicitor. He states that the consent of the tenants would certainly facilitate such a postponement.
Miscellaneous notes and drafts made by John Wilson Lynch, which were interspersed throughout the papers. Many of these were relevant to the fixing of fair rents in the 1880s.
